Sorrento is one of the best-known and most popular resorts in Italy. It is a seaside town and maintains the picturesque character of the costal town. It is bordered by crystal clear waters and surrounded by enchanting gardens and citrus fruit groves, yet much of its beauty is to be found along the roads in the houses with their typical local architecture, and in the monuments which testify to its long history. An enchanting place with many attractions; in the town centre, Piazza Tasso, is the classic starting point for a visit to the town. The piazza contains the statue of S. Antonino, the town’s patron saint. The Cathedral, with the ruins of a roman arch to its right, stands on the elegant, busy Corso Italia, the two branches of which separate here. But Sorrento is much more…
Pompeii was struck by a gigantic cloud of poisonous gases, ashes, lapilli and incandescent stones which deposited on the city burying it by seven metres. Some of the inhabitants attempted to escape towards the sea. The breathtaking extent of ruins which form this large urban centre was entirely surrounded by walls which wound for more than three kilometres around the city. Fairly well preserved, they had entrance gates at the most important city streets. The latter, particularly interesting, are almost all flanked by pavements and paved with polygonal slabs of varying sizes on which the passage of carriages and other vehicles has left in some cases deep grooves. Walking through the streets it is easy to imagine the live lines which must have characterized this ancient metropolis
